Use the same same ruler throughout your project. Not all rulers are exactly the same.

Sizing a quilt. Measure top of bed and add 12 inches all the way around. Add 24 inches if the quilt will be used for sleeping.

Common sizes of beds. Cribs 27 x 52 inches, Twin 39 x 75 inches, Full 54 x 75 inches, Queen 60 x 80 inches, King 76 x 80 inches

If you want to save measurements on your ruler, use small pieces of colored electrical tape – found at your local hardware store.

Looking for cheap material for templates. Go to your nearest medical clinic’s x-ray department and ask for the blank sheets that they run through their machines. They usually throw these blanks away every day. If there is ink on these sheets, you can soak in a mixture of bleach and water.

If you are working with templates to cut scraps to check sizes - Instead of placing the template above the scrap, place the scrap above the template. If you see any parts of the template, the scrap is too small. This saves time sizing up each piece.
